3. Contact your referees

Your responsibilities with the reference form

Once invited to upload your referee details to our reference website:

  • Directly contact your chosen referees to get agreement that they will act as a referee and inform them of the process
  • Actively follow up with your referees to ensure the reference is complete by application close date ideally

As a courtesy you should contact your referees prior to submitting their details to us so they expect to be contacted.

*If you are a PGY1 House Officer applying during the Annual Recruitment Cycle for a position commencing in November 2019, please submit referee details from Q2 2019 and Q1 2019. You do not need to provide one from Q3 2019.*

*If you are a PGY2+ House Officer applying during the Annual Recruitment Cycle for a position commencing in November or December 2019, please submit referee details from Q2 2019, Q1 2019 and Q4 2018. You do not need to provide one from Q3 2019.*

The referees you submit to us must fit within the following guidelines:

  • Must be a supervising consultant (must be at specialist level)
  • Must have supervised you in a clinical capacity (educational supervisors are not accepted as referees)
  • Cannot be your educational supervisor unless they are also your clinical supervisor
  • Cannot be a registrar
  • One must be your current supervisor if you are still working or your most recent supervisor if you are currently not working
  • Each supervisor must have supervised you for a minimum of 3-6 months unless it was a locum position*.  This is important for those that do not hold a current MCNZ practising certificate, however can be relaxed slightly for those RMOs working currently in NZ and holding a current MCNZ APC.

Please note that if one of these rotations/runs is/was a locum position we still require a reference or confirmation from your supervisor. If you have worked as a locum for less than five days email confirmation is fine from your supervisor. If you have worked as a locum for more than five days your supervisor will need to complete our reference template (which we will provide).
