As a House Officer you will have the opportunity to develop core skills prior to joining a training program, reporting to the head of department or consultant in-charge and performing a wide variety of clinical, clerical and teaching tasks. Each of our four hospitals provides a well-supported training environment with enthusiastic and knowledgeable senior clinicians who can mentor trainees through their rotations. We take an interest in your career aspirations and will guide you through your training within all our hospitals in Auckland. There is protected teaching time each week designed to help trainees expand their core medical knowledge.
Other learning opportunities include Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs and bedside teaching.

By joining the Auckland Region as a House Officer, you enter a programme with rotations through our tertiary teaching hospitals - North Shore, Waitakere, Auckland City and Middlemore Hospitals. All Auckland region hospitals are located within a thirty-five kilometre radius of each other.

House Officers' runs in the Auckland region are three months in length starting November “ February “ May “ August. Example run descriptions for the 2019/2020 training year can be viewed on the Auckland Doctors Website.

Am I eligible to apply for a House Officer position?

All applicants must be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). Check your eligibility ahead of making an application by visiting the MCNZ Self Assessment tool.

What do I need to apply?
  • General Scope of Registration with Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) if you are a NZ/AU Graduate.
  • Have at least 2 years post graduate experience and hold General Registration, if you are from UK or any other comparable health system country.
  • Have completed Internship (1 year) and General Registration, if applying from Ireland.
