Why train as a Cardiothoracic and Vascular ICU Senior House Officer:

  • Gain ICU exposure at an introductory level
  • Provide care to patients following cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, heart and lung transplantation, and mechanical cardiac and respiratory support; on ECMO support; and with acute cardiogenic shock and massive pulmonary embolism
  • CVICU has CICM accreditation and this could count as your foundation time
  • Regular weekly teaching on core ICU topics
  • Gain skills in assessment, problem solving, treatment plans; crisis management; procedural skills including ultrasound guided central venous cannulation; communication skills working in an MDT; research and audit

Please note:
  • The CVICU SHO run is only for 6 months duration. Should you be appointed to this position you will need to make plans for the commencement of the 2021 training year and apply for suitable positions accordingly. It is expected that (subject to satisfactory performance) CVICU SHOs will progress into either their first ICM registrar position, or in selected circumstances, into an Anaesthesia SHO position. Candidates wishing to do this will need to apply for these positions during the 2020 Annual Recruitment Cycle in April-May where positions for the 2021 training year will be advertised nationally.

  • Preferred: some exposure to acute care and commitment to ICM training
