Paediatrics Registrars - Expressions of Interest 2019 training year

  • Learn from world class doctors
  • High level of integration with employment and training
  • Experience a diverse population and a wide variety of patient presentations
  • As Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, there is plenty for you and your family/friends to do here. Whether it's dining at one of our world class restaurants, surfing our beautiful beaches or hiking through our lush forests, we have something for everyone! Working as an Auckland Doctor means that you have the opportunity to rotate at any one of our three DHB's, which will give you exposure to a variety of different specialties and cultures.

    Basic Trainee Opportunities

Most paediatricians in New Zealand are generalists, and so basic trainees will initially be given general Paediatrics and NICU runs across the three Auckland DHB's as well as Whangarei Base Hospital. There are opportunities to sub-specialise in a range of specialties, with advanced runs available for basic trainees depending on your experience and suitability. Across the hospitals there is a supportive environment when it comes to teaching and education - journal clubs, tutorials, case-based teaching, X-Ray conferences, grand rounds and Paediatric community teaching are some of the professional development opportunities you will have. Once employed into the training programme you are expected to complete 2-3 years of basic training before progressing to complete your advanced training.

    Advanced Trainee Opportunities

The Auckland Region also offers a unique experience for Advanced Trainees; one year blocks composed of two six month runs are available in areas of interest which can be accredited for training through RACP. These opportunities include; Emergency Care, Consult Liaison, Neonatal intensive care , Adolescent Medicine, Ambulatory Care (Outpatient clinic), Inpatient Paediatrics Subspecialty clinics and a six month fellow opportunity at Waitakere Hospital. These runs are aimed at advanced trainees and catered for accordingly in terms of training opportunities and experienced gained. Advanced trainees are also able to complete basic runs as available.

Our training programme also has the potential to work in Whangarei and is ideal for completing your rural requirements. If accepted onto the training programme you may be required to work in Whangarei but if you are particularly interested, please specify this as a preference. Enquiries about the roles and scope of the position can be directed to: Dr Koea Kaka, Recruitment Officer, Northland District Health Board. Email: Tel. 64 9 430 4101 Ext 3338. You still need to apply to the Auckland Paediatric training scheme in the first instance.

    Eligibility Criteria
    • 12 month's experience in Paediatrics is preferred.
    • Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. (For local trainees this means you must have completed two full post-graduate years).
